Cool & Unsettled Weekend For The Midwest

Upper-level troughing will persist across the northern and northeastern United States this weekend. While the initial trough that’s building into the Midwest today will remain across the region through late Friday before exiting, an additional trough will dig into the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley region from Saturday into early Sunday. These troughs will bring cooler temperatures and areas of unsettled weather to the Midwest on both days.

(500 MB HEIGHT ANOMALIES AT 11 PM FRI)

Last night, a surge of cooler air arrived across the Midwest as a cold front swept through. The secondary trough this weekend will allow the cooler temperatures to persist. Although temperatures won’t be significantly below average, expect temperature departures of 2-8° below normal on Sunday, resulting in widespread highs in the 70s for both days.

(SUNDAY FORECAST HIGH-TEMPERATURE ANOMALIES)

While sunshine is expected across the region this weekend, upper-level waves associated with the troughing will create areas of rain showers and perhaps a few thunderstorms on both days. According to current data, the greatest chances of rain on Saturday are in the afternoon across the northern Ohio Valley into the Southern Great Lakes. On Sunday, this threat could shift into southern central/southern portions of the Ohio Valley. Keep an eye on the forecast as you head out this weekend, as upper-level waves can be tricky to predict in advance.
